The practice of non-stop skin-to-skin contact with newborns, known as kangaroo care, results in healthier, more intelligent, better behaved children, according to a new study.

A 20-year follow-up from a study that was carried out in the 1990s found that those who had been born prematurely and cared for using kangaroo mother care had a measurably higher IQ and a more positive home environment compared to premature babies who were cared for in an incubator. The participants in the study showed that kangaroo-care children were less aggressive, they were less impulsive and hyperactive and they were also less likely to show antisocial behavior.

Dr Nathalie Charpak, lead researcher in the study, said that kangaroo mother care "is a powerful, efficient, scientifically based healthcare intervention that can be used in all settings." She added the skin-to-skin mother care worked, not matter the level of healthcare available, from rich to poor. The research indicates that the practice could benefit 'all babies'.

The follow-up study also showed that kangaroo mother care also changed the habits and behavior of the parents, making them more caring and protective of their children. Amy Hair, a baby-care expert at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, said: "Obviously this study only looks at small babies, but with what we know about mother-infant bonding and its calming effect on the baby, I would support kangaroo mother care for all babies."

Kangaroo mothering began in Colombia in South America. It is a simple method where the newborn is placed skin-to-skin in a so-called 'kangaroo' position on the mother or father's chest as soon as possible after birth. The parent's warmth and closeness acts as a kind of incubator. The baby can breast-feed as needed and this provides additional stimulation and bonding.

The full report and a summary of the original study can be read here: http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/early/2016/12/08/peds.2016-2063
