After the big earthquake on Monday that shook the area around Kaikoura on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island, there were fears that tourists might be put off visiting. But these concerns seem to be groundless as tourism operators report little change in bookings.

The small town of Kaikoura has been cut off from the rest of the country as roads north, south and west are blocked. Massive landslides have destroyed road and rail links after the 7.8 magnitude tremor. However, even the tourists who have been helicoptered out of the scenic spot have no plans to cut short their stay. Everyone just seems to be putting it down as an "interesting" experience and are looking for ways to continue their holidays.

Many holiday makers now plan to go north to Nelson, then visit the rest of the South Island by taking the coast road on the very west of the island. In fact West Coast tourism want visitors to know the region is very much open and ready for business. "We feel for our friends over the hill, but in the meantime, we want to extend a warm West Coast welcome to all tourists and reassure them that we are fully open for business and will give them a fantastic experience in our beautiful region, " Tourism West Coast chief executive Jim Little said.

Australia is New Zealand's largest tourism market, providing almost 1.4 million visitors in the year to September, and China comes in second with more than 400,000 visitors, a number that is growing fast. One official at the Chinese consulate in Christchurch said he had not yet heard of Chinese tourists canceling trips to New Zealand. "If there were any effect it is only temporary. Natural disasters are a possibility everywhere," he added.

Attracted by the awesome scenery, made even more famous by the "Lord of the Rings" movies, international tourists brought in NZ$14.5 billion to the New Zealand economy in the year to March. That was an increase of nearly 20 per cent over the year before, putting tourism ahead of dairy products as the country's biggest earner. Meanwhile the town of Kaikoura will be off the tourist map for a while. It was a hugely popular place to visit, mostly by people coming to see the whales in the rich fishing grounds just off the coast.
