Tesco's Marmite row with Unilever has been solved (CCSS Level: Grade 7, Words: 227)

This week Marmite lovers were shocked when the British supermarket chain Tesco threatened to remove Marmite from their shelves. The row happened because Unilever, the owner of the Marmite brand, said that the price of the product was going to go up by 10%.

For people not familiar with Marmite, it is a sticky, dark brown food paste, which is quite salty. It is made from yeast extract, a left-over product of beer making. The British company's advertising slogan says "Love it or hate it." This refers to the fact that not everyone likes the very strong taste. Marmite is also very popular in New Zealand and Australia. It is often spread on bread or toast and is popular at breakfast time.

The price of Marmite was set to go up as a result of the falling value of the British pound. The pound has gone down by 18% since Britain decided to leave the European Union or EU as it is called. When the value of money falls, the price for imported goods goes up. Marmite may not be the only thing to rise. Importers are saying that many more items will go up in price, probably after the Christmas holiday period.

But for now the row between Unilever and Tesco has been solved and a Tesco spokesperson said that Marmite lovers will still be able to buy their beloved bread spread at their stores.
