It is only a short time until Halloween, the popular festival when children, and some adults, dress up in scary costumes and roam the neighborhood playing tricks and receiving treats. The treats are usually sweets, candies or chocolates.

However this year things are a little different. For many weeks, scary clown sightings have had parents and children worried. People in the USA, but also now in other countries including England, have been putting on clown masks and jumping out at people to frighten them. And it is not even halloween yet.

Some people have been so scared by the frightening clowns that some stores, including the huge Target company, have stopped selling clown masks altogether. Police have been keeping a watch for clown tricksters going too far with their scariness. There have even been arrests, such as the two men in Detroit who were taken in by police for driving around town in clown clothes to scare the public. Police are also checking out another clown riding on the outside of a bus, which was caught on video.

Because of the bad publicity, fast-food giant McDonalds has removed their famous clown, Ronald McDonald, from their stores and their advertising. The company thought it was a good thing to do while the scary clown craze was going on. They may also have taken notice of a recent poll in which nearly half of Americans said they did not like circus clowns, and over 6% said they found clowns really frightening.

Target stores have already stopped selling clown masks. The US company has 1,799 stores in the United States. A spokesman said "Given the current environment, we have made the decision to remove a variety of clown masks from our assortment, both in stores and online. "

The worry about scary clowns even got famous horror writer Stephen King to comment online, trying to calm people's fears. He wrote on one social media site, "Hey, guys, time to cool the clown hysteria--most of em are good, cheer up the kiddies, make people laugh."
