Hawaii was the host for the 38th Ironman triathlon where 2,300 athletes came together to cover a 226 kilometre race that is perhaps the world's greatest test of body, mind and spirit.

The ironman triathlon is made up of three sections. There is a 3.9 km swim, a 180 km bicycle ride and a marathon 42.20 km run, raced in that order and without any breaks in between. Many think this to be the most difficult one-day sporting event in the world. The Ironman World Championship is held in Kailua-Kona in Hawaii, where it has been run every year since 1978.

German athletes took out first, second and third places. The winner was Jan Frodeno who completed the swim in 48:02, the bike ride in 4:29:00, and the marathon run in 2:45:34. He also won the race last year, becoming the second man to win back-to-back events in the Ironman. "I can't remember when I last suffered so much," Frodeno told the crowds after the race.

One Australian woman stood out in the crowded field however. Brave burns survivor Turia Pitt finished the Ironman race. Pitt was burned over 65 percent of her body after she was caught in a bushfire while taking part in a marathon back in 2011. She said on her blog that she'd been training for an Ironman since she was burned. Her doctors told her she would never run again due to her injuries.

Pitt said "It was like a light turned on inside my brain. I heard their words and I thought, I'll show you. I'm going to do an Ironman one day." She's done exactly that and much more. The race starts at 7.00 a.m. and the athletes have 17 hours to finish all three sections. Pitt finished it in 14 hours, 37 minutes and 30 seconds.
