Humans see the world with their eyes, but for dogs, the world they "see" is mostly built on what they can smell with their very sensitive noses. People have known for a very long time that dogs can smell things that human beings can't pick up at all. Now dog expert Professor Alexandra Horowitz says in her new book 'Being A Dog', that they may also be able to tell the time using just their noses. Dutch scientist Professor Horowitz did her research at Barnard College's Dog Cognition Lab.

"As each day wears a new smell, its hours mark changes in odours that your dog can notice, " she explains. Dogs are often used to sniff out drugs, explosives, disaster victims, dead bodies and even cancers, all because of their amazing sense of smell.

But even humans can get an idea of what time it is by smell alone. For example the smell of freshly-made coffee in the morning sends the message that it is time to get up. The smell of dinner cooking might signal that it is time for the evening meal. In the same way the dog expert believes that dogs can pick up tiny changes in smells throughout the day, giving them a pretty good sense of time.

"Smells in a room change as the day goes on. Hot air rises, and it usually rises in currents along the walls and will rise to the ceiling and go kind of to the centre of the room and drop," Professor Horowitz explained in an interview. This could explain why a dog can tell when its owner is due to return home. The dog may be able to pick up the level of its owner's decreasing scent since they left the house. When the scent reaches a learned low level, they may be able to tell roughly when their master is due to come back. That's how the dog knows when to go to the door and wait for its owner to turn up.

Dogs can tell when their owner is due home because…
of the smell of coffee on their master
of the smell of their dinner cooking
the air in the room has risen and fallen many times
the level of their owners scent has reached a low level
