Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, from author Ransom Riggs, has been a very popular book, making it onto the New York Times best-selling book list. Today it will also be able to be seen on the big screen, with the release of the movie version from famous director Tim Burton.

In the story, Jake's much loved grandfather leaves Jake clues about a strange mystery that goes between different worlds and different times. When Jake finds a magical place known as Miss Peregrine's School for Peculiar Children he begins to understand the mysteries and dangers of this odd place. As he gets to know the people who stay in the school and learns about their special powers, he realizes that they also have very frightening enemies. In the end, Jake finds that only his own special power, his own 'peculiarity', can save his new friends.

The film's director is Tim Burton, who is well known for his previous films, including Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. "As a child you never really forget those feelings of being different, " says Burton. "They stay with you forever. I was branded as being 'peculiar' because as a child I loved monster movies. So you go through things like that in your childhood and sometimes even later in life. There are a lot of people out there who feel that way."

The message of the movie is about not only accepting our differences but being able to be proud of them. The children at Miss Peregrine's home have found a safe place where they aren't made fun of for their special abilities, which include levitation, fire-manipulation and super-strength.

The movie tries to stay true to the spirit of the novel, keep what is special about it, but also make it suitable for a movie audience on the big screen.
