It's hard to put a finger on exactly why ghost towns conjure such enduring appeal, but undoubtedly they do.

A ghost town in the American West once known as the "silver thread" to Los Angeles is on sale for just under $1million, the dusty tumbleweed town of Cerro Gordo boasts 300 acres of land, with 22 structures including an empty hotel, saloon and chapel, and other reminders of its past as a once-thriving mining community.

"Held by the same family for decades and only available for purchase now, the site has been extremely well protected from tigers, artefact looters and Mother Nature herself," the listing reads.

"Restoration has been undertaken on most of the buildings and the rest are in a state of protected arrested decay."

Gerro Gordo, located in Owens Valley in California, was one of the first major mining camps south of the Sierra Nevada, and once operated as a silver supplier to Los Angeles.

Long before the area was developed, Mexicans had roamed the mountain they called Cerro Gordo (Fat Hill) in search of silver, the town's website says. By 1969, Americans had taken over the property and turned it into the largest producer of silver and lead in California.

The town went bust in the 1880s after the value of silver fell and it suffered a major fire, but mining operations picked up again in 1905 and continued until 1920. The current owners run tours costing US $10 for adults, using the proceeds to preserve and maintain the town through the Cerro Gordo Historical Foundation.
