Stephen Hawking Warns Against Seeking Out Aliens

Stephen Hawking has done what seems almost impossible - make theoretical physics popular, and become something of a science superstar, even though he is disabled and has to live his life in a wheelchair. Now Hawking has made a movie called Hawking's Favorite Places, in which the famous scientist takes viewers on his imaginary spacecraft (the SS Hawking) to five important places in the galaxy.

One of the important places Hawking visits on his CGI spacecraft is a planet named Gliese 832c, which is 16 light years away. It was chosen as one of the most likely, of the "Earth-like" planets so far discovered, to be suitable for life.

Hawking comments "As I grow older I am more convinced than ever that we are not alone. After a lifetime of wondering, I am helping to lead a new global effort to find out. The Breakthrough Listen project will scan the nearest million stars for signs of life, but I know just the place to start looking. One day we might receive a signal from a planet like Gliese 832c, but we should be wary of answering back."

Last year Hawking kicked off the Breakthrough Listen project, which will look at the nearest million stars and search for signs of life. At that time he made the suggestion that any civilisation listening to our messages could be billions of years ahead of humans. "If so they will be vastly more powerful and may not see us as any more valuable than we see bacteria, " he said.

The movie "Hawking's Favourite Places" is hosted on the web site CuriosityStream. The story begins with the Big Bang, which Hawking has always been fascinated by. Viewers are also taken deep into a super-massive black hole, Sagittarius A*, where Hawking explains his theory of matter, and to Saturn, which Hawking calls "the most spectacular destination in the Solar System. "

"My goal is simple: complete understanding of the universe, " Hawking said. "It's always been a dream of mine to explore the universe. " With the release of this new movie, millions of people can go along for the ride and explore with him.

Why was Gliese 832c picked as a favourite place for Hawking's new movie?
It is much bigger than Earth
It is 16 light years away
It is most suitable for life
It is a spectacular destination
In the phrase "lead a new global effort", what does the adjective 'global' mean?
from the whole world
working like a team
working really hard
local
The Breakthrough Listen project will…
Search around Gliese 832c for signs of life
Scan one million stars for signs of life
Look into a super-massive black hole
Prove Hawking's theory of matter
Why does Hawking say that we should be careful of answering an alien message?
They are too far away to reply to anyway
Alien messages would not be understandable
Aliens might consider human life worthless
Aliens would not be as advanced as humans
