Bright Nights begins this Friday, a free event that includes more than a dozen installations displayed between the NZ Maritime Museum and finishing at Waitematā Plaza.

The event includes a giant wishing well installation in Market Square, projections onto America's Cup boat KZ1, as well as a silent disco and the waterfront harbour completely lit up. The event will come alive from 6pm to late on Friday 11 May until Sunday 13 May, and is free and suitable for all ages.

The event is selected and organised by award-winning lighting artist Angus Muir, to create a full scale lighting experience. "The waterfront means a lot to Auckland City, and creating a light art experience that interacts with the water itself was always the goal. The opportunity to use Viaduct Harbours as a canvas to launch a full-scale lighting festival for everyone to enjoy is pretty much a dream come true," he said.

The theme of clean seas and sustainability lies beneath the festivals' storyline. Audio will play a key part in the overall experience, with phone company, Spark as well as Spotify presenting 'Square Dance Discotheque', a central installation by Perceptual Engineering that will see the audience take part via headphones in an interactive silent disco-experience.

The event is similar Sydney's much larger Vivid festival, which runs for three weeks and stretches from Darling Harbour to the Opera House and Botanic Gardens, and includes performances by major internationals stars along with cultural events.

If successful, we can look forward to seeing Auckland's Bright Nights become a larger annual event.
