The World Happiness Report, released on Wednesday, ranked 156 countries based on factors including life expectancy, social support and corruption.

In reaching No. 1, Finland nudged neighbouring Norway into second place,, according to the annual survey, which found Americans were getting less happy even as their country became richer.

Taking their harsh, dark winters in their stride, Finns said access to nature, safety, childcare, good schools and free healthcare were among the best things about their country. "I've joked with other Americans that we are living the American dream here in Finland," said Brianna Owens, who moved from the US and is now a teacher in Espoo, Finland's second biggest city with a population of around 280,000. "I think everything in this society is set up for people to be successful, starting with university and transportation that works really well," she added.

The Nordic countries of Finland, Norway, Denmark and Iceland topped the list - and New Zealand ranked No. 8, two spots above Australia. Compared to last year, NZ remains unchanged, while Australia ranked ninth. The United States came in at 18th, down from 14th place last year, while Britain came 19th.

Unlike past years, the annual report published by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network also evaluated 117 countries by the happiness and well-being of their immigrants. Europe's Nordic nations, none particularly diverse, have dominated the index since it first was produced in 2012.
