"Black Panther" Movie Review
Imagine the most technologically advanced nation in the world (CCSS Level: Grade 8, Words: 340)
Mar 1, 2018 Culture & Entertainment

Marvel Comic's newest superhero movie "Black Panther" has broken box office records since its Feb 16 release, The film, with an almost entirely black cast, broke through the $700 million mark in its second weekend, and appears headed like a laser to the exclusive $1 billion club of Hollywood blockbusters. If the estimates hold, the third weekend of "Black Panther" could be the second to third best of all time.

"Black Panther" has been one of the top conversation pieces and has sparked numerous controversies. Overall, the time scores 1 7.7/10 on IMB, a 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and an 87 percent on Metacritic.

The story is based off the original Black Panther comics from Marvel and takes places in the fictional nation of Wakanda in Africa. Wakanda is a hidden nations whose resources, wealth and technology could easily aid struggling nations throughout the world. For years, the Wakandan people kept resources to themselves to maintain peace among nations, as they do not want to wage war on the rest of the world. This system is thrown out of balance when T'Challa's long-lost cousin Erik Killmonger returns and claims the throne.

Killmonger wishes to spread and share the wealth and resources of Wakanda with the rest of the world in order to benefit everyone. Imagine Wakanda's mechanicla marvels of hyper loop rapid transit, maglev trains snaking through airborne tubes amid hoverbikes and spaceships shaped like dragonflies. However, he also wants Wakanda to be the supreme nation of the world and act as a dictating force that goes against the Wakandan people's core values.

T'Challa must then partake in an epic battle with Killmonger in order to save Wakanda as well as the rest of the world - an ultimate struggle between good and evil. The "villain" in "Black Panther" is different from those in other superhero movies because Killmonger is genuinely trying to do the right thing, but using the wrong approach. He wishes to help the rest of the world by sharing and spreading Wakanda's wealth, but instead of doing this practically, he only wishes to wage war and make Wakanda the supreme nation. Killmonger is misunderstood naive, but he has good intentions deep down, making him unlike others villains.

"Wakanda can't exist, not owning to any inherent flaw in Afircans but because of the inherent flaws of human beings. Every human society involves trade-offs… In theory you can avoid wealth disparity through socialism, but collectivism destroys the incentives to create, innovate and work hard, and a corrupt few inevitably rise to the top, creating new wealth disparities. People have to choose what values they prioritise in their nation." The conservation National Review's Jim Geraghty note.

Along with action-packed entertainment, "Black Panther" possesses them and qualities that many people can relate to, even if they are not huge fans of super hero movies. T'Challa exhibits traits of an effective leader: compassionate, loyal to his country, brave, courageous, intelligent and slow to anger. He shows that one must display a strong sense of responsibility when in power, and shows how to act when the state of a nation rests in your hands.

"Black Panther" is monumental for many reasons. It teaches people qualities of diversity, leadership and compassion. Additionally, it provides young African-American children in our generation with a superhero to admire who looks like they do. It is vital for children of every race to have a role model. For young African-American children to see an entire cast - with the same complexion as them - play the good guys and save the world? That's essential.
