Mikaela Shiffrin Is Once Again On Top
With third straight World Cup win, Mikaela Shiffrin Secures Olympic Start in Slalom (CCSS Level: Grade 8, Words: 297)
Dec 20, 2017 Sports

The 22-year-old Shiffrin continued at the top of her game this season by winning the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup women's slalom on Friday in Lienz, Australia, her second slalom win this season and 27th slalom win of her career.

Shiffrin, who has already qualified for the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang 2018 in giant slalom has now secured her start in slalom after she won her third straight race to claim the 36th World Cup victory of her career on Thursday.

Backed by a huge 1.14-second lead from the opening leg, the defending overall World Cup champion stayed safe and posted only the 11th-fastest time in the final run but still comfortably beat second-place holder Wendy Holdener of Switzerland by 0.89 seconds. Frida Hansdotter of Sweden was 1.22 behind in third, and Bernadette Schild of Austria was a further 0.55 behind in fourth position.

"It was a wild ride," Shiffrin said about her second run on the Schlossberg course, where she earned her first major win six years ago. "There were a couple of weak spots but there were definitely some spots that were really fast."

Shiffrin then skied carefully as conditions worsened on the final run to take the victory for her 52nd time.

Shiffrin's winning total continues to mount heading toward PyeongChang. Last season's overall World Cup champion, she already has five World Cup wins this season, including another in slalom on Nov. 26 in Killngton, Vermont. In addition, she also won downhill on Dec. 2 at Lake Louise, Alberta, giant slalom on Dec 19 at Courchevel, France, and parallel slalom - a non -Olympic event - on Dec 20, also in Couchevel.

Shiffrin, from Eagle-Vail, Colorado, leads the current World Cup standings in overall, downhill, slalom and giant slalom.
