Pixar's Coco Delivers a Touching Film on Mexican Traditions and Family
Coco is funny, poignant, exciting, beautiful - another classic from Pixar(CCSS Level: Grade 6, Words: 300)
Dec 12, 2017 Culture & Entertainment

It's been twenty two years since Toy Story, twenty two years of ups and downs, but really, more ups than downs. That the same studio that brought us the Toy Story films, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles as well as Finding Dory can still release something as mind-bogglingly good as Coco is nothing short of astounding. Pixar and Disney have done it again, with yet another blockbuster hit on their hands.

Coco is set to win the box office for the third weekend in a row with $19 million at 3,748 sites, ahead of the release of Disney-Lucasfilm's 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' next weekend. This and the previous weekend have seen studios hold off from any major wide releases. The latest 'Star Wars' instalment is expected to dominate when it opens on Dec 15.

Coco the film is about a boy, named Miguel Rivera, who is cursed because his family does not like music, yet he plays guitar and idolises his hero, Ernesto De La Cruz. Miguel's great great grandfather left his family to continue his passion for music. When Miguel's family finds Miguel's guitar they destroy it. On the night of Die De Los Muertos and with a competition in his town, Miguel walks inside the mausoleum of De La Cruz and takes the guitar to compete with in the competition. Once he strums it he is transported to the "Land of the Dead." Miguel then meets with his late family members who teach him a lesson about family, listening to them and honouring them.

With a nearly all Latino cast, Coco provides accuracy and representation of Mexican culture and the beauty of "The Day of the Dead." This film will make you both laugh and cry - along with your popcorn, tissues are highly recommended.
