Castles In The Sand
Long Beach Art and Music Festival, California (CCSS Level: Grade 6, Words: 293)
Sep 7, 2016 Culture & Entertainment

Long Beach has just hosted its famous sand-sculpture contest for the 84th time, making it one of the longest-running events of its kind in the world.

The two-day community festival lets professional and semi-professional sand sculptors do their thing, and thousands turn up every year. There is also food and craft vendors as well as live music. The great weather and the attraction of seeing amazing sculptures made out of nothing more than wet sand, attracted over 10,000 people to the two-day festival.

More than 300 tons of sand was carved into art along the waterfront on Saturday. World Master sculptors from seven countries took part and each of the artists already had a long list of international awards for their work. There was also a section for amateurs to try their hand as well.

A lot of work goes into making a good sand sculpture. Sculptors need to be very patient and of course it takes quite a long time to make something really special.

Sculptors use a special kind of sand called heavy sand and it is different to the sand you normally see on the beach. The sand for sand sculpture competitions is trucked in from a quarry. If you look really closely you can see that each grain is square, which means it sticks together better, like building blocks. The sand on a beach is smoother and rounder so it doesn't stay together quite as well.

But even though the sand is strong enough to last for the few days of a competition, of course the weather and the sea will claim it back again quite soon. Sand artists know that their works are temporary and are to be enjoyed for just a moment in time.
