New Zealand's World Cup Dream Is Over
All White's World Cup hopes shattered as Peru qualify for the first time in 35 years (CCSS Level: Grade 7, Words: 319)

The All Whites have lost to Peru 2-0 in the second leg of the World Cup Intercontinental playoff. NZ's World Cup dream may be over, but All Whites coach Anthony Hudson is urging the country to show pride in the team.

It was a tough night for the visiting team, who struggled to retain possession for any decent periods, while facing constant attacks from the South American team.

After some strong defending - as they were starting to work their way into the game - the circumstances of the first Peruvian goal were disappointing. The All Whites were caught out by a swift counter attack, with Winston Reid forced to come across and cover Christian Cueva. Cueva make space well, then delivered a killer pass to Jefferson Farfan, who smashed it past Stefan Marinovic.

That moment changed the tide of the game; until then the pressure had been building, and the 45,000 crowed were starting to get impatient and frustrated. The Peruvians were finding space frequently, but couldn't create clear chances and some nerves were starting to show.

Peru had earlier hit the crossbar in the 3rd minute with a powerful long range lick, in what would have been a dream start for the home side.

The All Whites striker Kosta Barbarouses had a penalty appeal in the opening minute of the match when he was pulled back by his shirt by a Peruvian defender but the referee refused his penalty plea.

NZ's best scoring chance int the first half came right on the break when skipper Winston Reid rose above the Peru defence only to head the ball from a corner over the bar. With nothing to lose NZ tried to go on the attack but even with three corners in succession at one point they were unable to get on the scoreboard.

Peru's win means they qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 35 years.
