Kiwis Sick Of Being Left Off World Maps
New Zealand keeps getting left off world maps - and Kiwis aren't happy(CCSS Level: Grade 7, Words: 335)

New Zealand is a fairly regular inclusion on any traveller's hit list. Its magnificent scenery attracts explorers and filmmakers in alike, while the country's taste for adventure (think skydiving, bungee jumping and whitewater rafting) is world famous.

However hanging out in the bottom right hand corner of the traditional world map has left New Zealand vulnerable to editing when TV shows, designers or retailers come to creating their own maps. Sometimes the country disappears into the blue, swallowed by the wide Pacific.

Wall stickers, boardgames, greeting cards… from tech giant Sega to the Simpsons, New Zealand has time and time again found itself left on the cutting room floor. Even the New Zealand government's own website once posted a map omitting itself. The Smithsonian Natural History Museum, the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art, and Star Trek have also been guilty of the oversight.

So upset Kiwis have come together to document the wealth of omissions (though Australia always makes an appearance) on Reddit, under a forum named MapsWithoutNZ, which now hosts 28,400 subscribers and counting.

Writing about the grievance on New Zealand website 'Stuff', Hannah Martin said: "New Zealand has given a lot to the world - Lorde, Sir Edmund Hillary, the Lord of the Rings films - but time and again we find ourselves left out, and left off the map. Granted, we're in a funny spot - we're all the way down in the far corner, awkwardly floating somewhere to the right of Australia. But if a map can include tiny islands like Malta, Mauritius and New Caledonia, shouldn't we get a mention too?"

The BBC went out to the streets in London to show some of those maps to people and test whether they could figure out which country was missing. The good news is that a lot of people spotted the empty space where NZ should be.

"I think I would complain as well," one of the people said. Others, however, understood the lapse, "Oh, but it's so tiny, nobody notices it," another commented.
