The rare frilled shark is considered a "living fossil, " because evidence of its existence dates back to at least 80 million years ago. This summer, researchers found one alive and doing well off the coast of Portugal, adding yet more clues about the long-lasting ability of this ancient sea creature. Researchers hope the discovery will lead to better understanding of the species, as very little is known about it.

The snake-like male shark measured 1.5 metres long, and was caught at a depth of 700 metres, off the resort of Portimao in Portugal by researchers who were working on a European Union project in the area, the BBC reported. The aim of the project was to "minimise unwanted catches in commercial fishing," said the researchers, but the team caught one of the rarest and most ancient animals on the planet.

According to the scientists, the specie is "little known in terms of its biology or environment" because of the fact it lives at depths that are rarely explored by humans.

Scientists believe the frilled shark has remained the same, both inside and out, since the Cretaceous Period, when the Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops still roamed the planet. The creature, known by scientists as Chlamydoselachus anguineus, is incredibly simple and un-evolved, most likely due to the lack of nutrients found in its deep-sea home.

"The shark gets its name from the frilled arrangement of its 300 teeth. The teeth allow the shark to trap its prey, including squid, fish and other sharks - in sudden lunges", University of Algarve Professor Margarida Castro said.

This isn't the first time that a frilled shark has been caught. Last December, a fisherman called Roman Fedortsov uploaded a picture to Twitter of a frilled shark he caught in Russia.
