Notes Written By Einstein In A Tokyo Hotel In 1922 Now Worth A Fortune
Albert Einstein's notes on life and happiness sell at auction (CCSS Level: Grade 7, Words: 242)
Oct 26, 2017 History

Two notes written by Albert Einstein brief outlining his thoughts on life and happiness went on sale 95 years after they were written.

Shortly after being informed he had won the Nobel Prize, Einstein took a trip to Japan to deliver a series of lectures. The news spread quickly and the German physicist's fame had reallygrown as he arrived in Japan. He was greeted by thousands of onlookers.

When a messenger came to his room at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Einstein did not have a tip available, so instead of money, the famous scientist handed him two handwritten notes, saying that they could become more valuable in the future.

One, written on the offical paper of the Imperial Hotel, said: "A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness." On the other, written on a blank piece of paper, Einstein wrote: "Where there's a will there's a way." He signed and dated both.

Einstein reportedly advised the man to keep the notes, saying that they may one day be worth more than any tip he could give.

The two notes were put on sale at the Winner's auction house in Israel. The first one went to an unnamed buyer, who agreed to pay $1.3 million dollars. The second signed Einstein note sold for over $200,000. The famous physicist's words were prophetic as the notes' worth certainly exceeded any tip he might have offered.
