The Antarctic Heritage Trust has recovered a 106-year old fruit cake on Cape Adare in ice-covered Antarctica, where the famous explorer Robert Falcom Scott's team was based for the Terra Nova expedition.

Conservators for the trust said the cake's tin was rusted, but the cake (made by British biscuit company Huntley & Palmers) still looked and smelled edible, according to Lizzie Meek, the manager of the program's artifacts. It's been documented that Scott liked this particular brand of cake. According to Ms Meeks, the Trust also found some 'badly deteriorated' meat and fish, and some 'rather nice-looking' jams.

"Finding such a perfectly preserved fruitcake in amongst the last handful of unidentified and severely corroded tins was quite a surprise," Ms Meek said. "It's an ideal high-energy food for Antarctic conditions, and is still a favourite item on modern trips to the ice."

The New Zealand-based Trust found the cake in Antarctica's oldest building, a hut built by Norwegian explorer Carsten Borchgrevink's team in 1899, and used by Capt Scott in 1911 during his Terra Nova expedition as he attempted to reach the South Pole. Since May 2016, the team from the Trust has conserved over 1500 artifacts from Cape Adare. The finds will be returned to the huts once they are restored, so as to comply with the site's status as an Antarctic Specially Protected Area.

The cake's survival is bittersweet, as Capt Scott and his companions were not so lucky. They successfully reached the South Pole, only to find that a Norwegian team had beaten them to it by 33 days. The British exporters all died on their way back to base.

What is the main reason that this fruitcake survived?
extremely cold weather
high sugar content
it was stored in a tin
alcohol such as sherry
Which is NOT a common ingredient for fruit cake?
