Apple's China App Store Has Removed VPN's
The move appears to be part of an ongoing crackdown (CCSS Level: Grade 10, Words: 377)

China famously censors the internet within the country, preventing its citizens from accessing websites such as Facebook or Google, and has pushed companies to register their App stores with government regulators or remove content that it deems illegal.

In a statement yesterday, an Apple spokeswoman confirmed it will remove apps that don't comply with the law from its China App Store, including services based outside the country.

Apple has removed all major VPN apps from its App Store. These VPNs aided internet users there to get around the government's vast system of censorship and access uncensored sources of media. Beijing has shut down dozens of China-based providers and it has been targeting overseas services as it bids to tighten its control over the internet, especially ahead of the Communist Party congress in August.

While personal VPN providers have been the subject of state-led attacks in the past, this marks the first time Apple has complied with requests to scrub overseas providers from its store, a move that VPN providers say is unnecessarily supportive of China's tightening censorship enforcement.

But by doing so, Apple has clearly decided to put its business before the interests of the population, complain internet leaders and activists. For example, Golden Frog, which makes privacy and security software including WyprVPN, was just one of several providers who said its software had been unceremoniously dumped from the App Store. This was even after the company had supported Apple in their backdoor encryption battle with the F.B.I. last year. There's loyalty for you.

"We're disappointed in this development, as it represents the most drastic measure the Chinese government has taken to block the use of VPNs to date, and we are troubled to see Apple aiding China's censorship efforts," ExpressVPN said in a statement.

This is no small matter. This is the first time China has won the battle to pressure a major foreign tech platform to get rid of software that helped people tunnel out of China's restrictive version of the Internet.

China users with billing addresses in other countries will still be able to access VPN apps from other branches of the App Store and a number of VPN apps were still accessible on the China App Store as of last Saturday.

Why did Apple making such a decision?
to comply with the law from its China App Store
because China is huge market for Apple
because Apple wanted to protect its business interests
all of these
Why are VPN providers so disappointed?
their businesses have received restrictions
they don't like Apple users any more
VPN's don't support integration into Apple's OS
their VPN's don't work well in China
