Roger Federer has spent most of his life breaking records and passing milestones but the 35-year-old Swiss celebrated his greatest achievement at Wimbledon on Sunday on the court he loves more than any other in the world.

Since Spencer Gore claimed the first singles championship at Wimbledon 140 years ago, no man has ever won the title eight times. Momentously, Federer, who won Wimbledon at 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 27 and 30, won it again Sunday at 35, further cementing his name into the men's tennis record books where it appears almost as prominently as it would in a biography.

In capturing the male record eighth Wimbledon singles title, Federer became the oldest Wimbledon champion of the Open Era, and also became the oldest Grand Slam champion since Ken Rosewall way back in in 1972. Federer commented "My heroes walked the groups here and walked the courts here."

Federer also surpasses the greats such as Pete Sampras and William Renshaw, who won their seventh titles in 2000 and 1889 respectively, with only the legendary Martina Navratilova still ahead in terms of Wimbledon singles titles, on nine wins.
