France will end sales of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040.

Nicolas Hulot announced the planned ban on fossil fuel vehicles as part of a renewed commitment to the Paris Climate deal, to meet its targets under the Paris climate accord, Emmanuel Macron's government has announced.

The announcement comes a day after Volvo said it would only make fully electric or hybrid cars from 2019 onwards, a decision hailed as the beginning of the end for the internal combustion engine's dominance of motor transport after more than a century.

Hulot said: "France planned to become carbon neutral by 2050. Hybrid cars make up about 3.5% of the French market, with pure electric vehicles accounting for just 1.2%. I recognised the target would put pressure on France's car manufacturers, but we currently have projects which can fulfil that promise." He added that the move was a "veritable revolution. "

It is not yet clear what will happen to existing fossil fuel vehicles still in use in 2040.

Mr Hulot said the government wanted to maintain the country's "leadership" in climate policy. "We want to demonstrate that fighting against climate change can lead an improvement of French people's daily lives," he said.

Mr. Hulot, a veteran environmental campaigner, was appointed by the new French President Emmanuel Macron. Mr Macron has openly criticised US environmental policy, urging Donald Trump to "make our planet great again."

France is not the only country which aims to ban combustion-powered cars. The Netherlands and Norway previously said they wanted to get rid of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2025 and Germany and India announced similar plans ahead of 2030.

Which one NOT a reason why Mr Macron has criticised US environmental policy?
he doesn't like Donald Trump
Mr Trump withdrew America from the Paris accord
Mr Trump's has gone back on his predecessor's commitments towards the climate
"Wherever we live, whoever we are, we all share the same responsibility: make our planet great again."
