The loyal fans were't worried, but rewind a year and many people were questioning Nintendo's ability to compete realistically with Sony and Microsoft in the console market.

The Wii-U, a follow on to the wildly successful Wii, had not met expectations, and the new console, Switch, seemed like it would be just too basic to make any real impact. Yet At E3 this year, the company is brimming with confidence. Its strategy has paid off.

"It seems to have brought back Nintendo's mojo, " says Tom Phillips, new editor at Eurogamer. "You look at where Nintendo are now compared to 12 months ago, and it's night and day. They really turned things around."

The Switch got off to a blistering start when it came out in March. It sold almost three million units in the first month, making it the company's fastest-selling console. Nintendo said on Thursday that it expects profit for its current fiscal year to jump by 121 percent, hitting a seven-year high, thanks to strong sales of its new Switch console, along with older hardware and mobile gaming products.

The Japanese gaming giant forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2018:
▪ Net sales of 750 billion yen ($6.7 billion)
Operating profit of 65 billion yen
▪ 10 million units of the Switch consoles to be sold

It's a positive announcement to kick off the fiscal year for Nintendo, after spending much of the previous 12 months trying to consolidate its business. The company has launched a number of mobile games including last summer's hit "Pokemon Go" and more recently "Super Mario Run". Mobile had been an area Nintendo had previously lost out on, but it is now making strong progress and expects it to be one of its "major pillars of profits" in the future.

"We are not such a big company as our competitors. We need to do things differently, We really put a lot of love into our products. I am not going to lie to you, the Wii is something that we're looking at," said Nicolas Wegnez, general manager for Nintendo in the UK, "We would really love to go back to that growing path of really making many more people smile playing Nintendo products.
