What's the oldest living thing in the world? It's not an easy question to answer. Mayflies live a day, humans live a century, if we're lucky, but what is the oldest living organism on the planet? For scientists, accurately proving the age of any long-lived species is a hard task, according to the BBC.

Proving when things were born often involves some traditional detective work, as head of the arboretum's Tony Kirkham explains: "It's a delicate art, as first of all we can look at previous records, to find out if tree was growing there at a set date. Then we look at paintings and artwork, to look to see if that tree was present. And old ordinance survey maps quite clearly show ancient trees, especially important ones."

A well-know way of measuring the age of a tree is by counting the rings in its trunk, one ring per year of growth. It's a process known as dendrochronology and only works for certain types of tree that have an annual growth spurt. The obvious problem is that counting rings normally involves cutting down the tree.

However a team of researchers in the US keeps a list, called the "old list", of officially dated ancient trees. Here are 6 of the oldest trees in the world:

1. Old Tjikko (Sweden)
The world's oldest known living tree sprouted sometime during the last Ice Age, roughly 9,550 years ago.

2. Methuselah (California)
A bristlecone pine tree from California's White Mountains, is thought to be almost 5,000 years old, and the oldest non-clonal tree in the world. This time-worn tree has lived through the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. It was already established when the Ancient Egyptians started building pyramids.

3. Llangernyw (North Wales)
A lush, 4,000-year-old yew tree, was inducted into a list of 50 Great British Trees by the UK Tree Council in 2002, which as far as tree donors are concerned, is a pretty big deal.

4. Zoroastrian Sarv (Iran)
A tree in central Iran, is an Iranian National Monument. The 4,000-year-old cypress took root right about the time ancient people in Central Asia were inventing wheels with spokes, and over the course of its long life, witnessed the advent of modern human civilization.

5. Fitzroya Cupressoides (Chile)
A type of tall, skinny evergreen in the Andes Mountains, are some of the oldest trees in the world, known commonly as the Alerce, and scientists have been tracking and protecting one specific tree, which is thought to be more than 3,600 years old.

6. The Tree of One Hundred Horses (Sicily)
This enormous chestnut near the Mount Etna Volcano in Sicily, is though to be somewhere between 2,000 and 4,000 years old.
