Kiwis Qualify For America's Cup 2017 Finals
Great Britain eliminated by New Zealand who came back from dramatic capsize (CCSS Level: Grade 7, Words: 382)
Jun 9, 2017 Sports

Emirates Team New Zealand moved a step closer to an America's Cup rematch with Oracle Team USA as they ended the quest of Sir Ainslie's Land Rover BAR.

Two days after a frightening capsize that threatened their challenge, NZ won two out of three races on Thursday to reach the challenger final. The Kiwis were the stronger challenger, and despite dropping one race to Great Britain, they showed no outward scars after Tuesday's dramatic capsize.

Team New Zealand made a strong comeback, and dominated from mark-to-mark at the start. Britain were under intense pressure, knowing they had to win at least two of Thursday's three races against New Zealand to force their play-off semi-final into a deciding day, but Sir Ainslie's team went down 5-2 in the first-to-five series.

It was a sweet victory for New Zealand after their catamaran capsized during racing in high winds on Tuesday.

"I was really proud of the way the team sailed today, "said Ainslie afterwards.

Great Britain had a 26-second lead at the first mark before their opponents came back to secure a 31-second victory. Britain managed to hang on with a near-perfect win in the next race after getting off to a strong start and, this time, maintained their lead and matched their opponents for speed.

However, New Zealand's class shone through as they put Tuesday's troubles behind them.

"We struggled coming into this with a lack of speed but everyone has dug so deep to get us more competitive, " added Ainslie.

The Kiwis will now get a day off, ahead of the best-of-nine challenger final starting on Sunday. The Kiwis will take on Sweden or Japan in the play-off final. The America's Cup match against defenders Oracle is now in sight.

What happens next?
Holders Oracle Team USA await the winners of the challenger final in the America's Cup.

The first to seven points wins the American's Cup, or the Auld Mug as the trophy is known, with a possible 13 races to be sailed on 17-18 and 24-27 June.

The America's Cup, the oldest competition in international sport, was first raced in 1851 around the Isle of Wight and has only ever been won by four nations.
