Around 100,000 fans were allowed in for free at the Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey today and yesterday for the Epsom Derby.

The Queen beamed as she arrived for the classic Epsom Downs race day. The smiling monarch was dressed in bright yellow and wore a floral hat as she arrived at the event on Saturday for the 4.30pm race.

The 91-year-old is an avid racehorse owner and attends the Epsom racing festival, among others, every year.

The Investec Epsom Derby is also the richest race in the UK and offers a £1.5 million prize. Wings of Eagles came from second-to-last in an 18-horse field to win by three-quarters of a length under little-known jockey Padraig Beggy, who earned his first Derby win.

The Queen's Official Birthday is a selected day in some Commonwealth states on which the birthday of the monarch (currently Queen Elizabeth II) is officially celebrated in those countries. The sovereign's birthday was first officially marked in the United Kingdom in 1748, for King George II. The United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand all celebrate the Queen's birthday.
