Mike Smith, a Welsh fruit grower enlisted the help of Nottingham Trent University and has come up with the "Dragon's Breath" chilli. It has a Scoville scale rating of 2.4 million units of heat, compared to the current record held by The PuckButt Pepper Company in the US for its "Smoking Ed's Carolina Reaper", which rates at an average of 1.5 million Scoville heat units.

Mr Smith said: "I am not a fan of spicy food. I originally intended it to be a thing of beauty rather than a sensory beast. The chilli's heat was 'beyond' and could not be eaten, but instead used as an alternative to anaesthetic in third world countries - which do not have access to, or the money, for drugs, as the oil from it is capable of numbing the skin. Or it could also be useful on people who are allergic to anaesthetic. "

Describing his previous experience of tasting hot chillies, he described the heat intensity as 'building up and up' about half an hour after biting into them. Experts believe that anymore who attempted to swallow one of the chilli peppers would be at risk of death from anaphylactic shock. "You should use common sense at the end of the day," he said.

The 3ft tree (0.9m high) was on Wednesday night being installed at the Royal Horticultural Society's London show ground, where it will be in contention for the "Plant of the Year" award.

The Dragon's Breath is so powerful that one drop of its capsicum oil would be detectable in 2.48 million drops of water. Mr Smith has applied to the Guinness World Records and is currently awaiting confirmation that the chilli is the world's hottest.

Why could this fiery food kill you?
it could send you into anaphylactic shock
chill peppers cause the eater's insides to overact
it would activate the sympathetic nervous system to expend more energy
all of the above
