China is no stranger to massive engineering projects, and the most recent addition to its history of landscape-reshaping solutions is a recent plan by a city-level institute to divert water from Siberia hundreds of kilometres south to Lanzhou, the capital of Northwest China's Gansu Province.

According to the Lanzhou Urban & Rural Planning and Design Institute, the scheme of a pipeline starting from the southwest point of Lake Baikal, stretching some 1,000km, will be able to send pure water from the deepest lake in the world to Lanzhou through the Hexi corridor, a narrow east-west route that runs for 1,000km between the Tibetan Plateau and the dunes of the Gobi Desert, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

"Once the technical issues are resolved, diplomats should sit down and talk to each other about how each part would benefit from such international cooperation" said Li Luoli, an academic who is one of the plan's originators and the vice president of the China Society of Economic Reform, a state-run think tank.

The project would boost both Gansu's "ecological environment" and its economy which the newspaper said had been severely disadvantaged by the lack of water. The drastic plan highlights the severity of the water crisis facing Beijing. China has 20% of the world's population but just 7% of its fresh water. The north, in particular, faces a catastrophic shortage of fresh water. mostly due to urbanisation, overuse, wastage and pollution.
