Uber hires NASA veteran to help it figure out flying cars (CCSS Level: Grade 8, Words: 231)

In 2010, an advanced aircraft engineer at NASA's Langley Research Centre named Mark Moore published a white paper outlining the feasibility of electric aircraft that could take off and land like helicopters but smaller and quieter. The vehicles would be capable of providing a speedy alternative to the dreary boring commute.

Now Mark Moore, a 30-year veteran of NASA, has left the aeronautics agency for a much more down-to-earth business: ride-hailing giant Uber. But Moore won't be working on anything as boring as expanding Uber's ground operation. According to Bloomberg, he will be working on the company's emerging on-demand aviation service, also know as Uber's flying car project.

"I can't think of another company in a stronger position to be the leader for this new ecosystem and make the urban electric vertical take-off and landing market real," he says.

Uber isn't constructing a flying car just yet. But in its own massive white paper published last October, the company detailed its plans to launch an "on demand aviation" service called Uber elevate. Yes, that's right. Uber is working on a flying car project. The project would be a giant leap forward for a company that has already fundamentally altered the way we think about labour, transportation, pollution, etc. But more importantly, it could prove to be a way to literally transcend the daily headaches of intercity travel.
