Olympic Horses Travel Business Class
Flying Olympic horses to Rio is a real challenge (CCSS Level: Grade 6, Words: 354)
Aug 17, 2016 Sports

You've probably seen the athletes participating in the Olympics, and of course they probably got there by flying from their home country or from wherever they were training. But there is another group of Olympic participants that you might not have thought of, and they are the horses. These champion horses have also had to get to the games, and just like the athletes they travel by air.

But getting to the games for a horse is a little different than it is for a human. You may be surprised to hear that horses travel business or first class, and there is a whole industry built around the transporting of these four-legged athletes around the world.

One such company is the Dutta Corporation, who transported the American team's horses, along with many others. Their spokesman Richard Picken commented "Just like a human that flies — some people like it, some people don't. Same with the horses, really." The most difficult part is to get the horses on and off the plane. They ride in the main cargo deck of commercial flights, but first they are loaded into horse containers on the ground and put into the plane with a lift. Most of the horses fly to Rio with two in each container. Picken said. "When we put two horses in, it's flying business class, and when we put one horse in, it's first class."

The pilots, of course, know that they are flying with horses, so they take off and land really slowly and smoothly. On the journey attendants called grooms, as well as vets, check on the horses to make sure they are not getting upset. They feed them and make sure the animals are drinking water. If they aren't drinking, the groom might try to get them to drink by adding apple juice, which horses love. There are least 11 grooms and vets on each flight and you can think of them as cabin crew for horses.

Like most champions, the horses have travelled many times before and most of them fly without distress or worry. Indeed, traveling business class maybe they quite enjoy it.
